Thoughts on tithing

So last night I went to Relief Society to hear some speakers talk about rags to riches. One of the speakers was talking about all the things we should be doing like praying(not as often as we should), scripture study, and so on. Well she got to tithing and said that was one thing they always did no matter what. That got me to thinking. Paying tithing is also the only thing we do on a regular basis. Sad as it is to say, scriptures are not being read all the time, and prayers should be said more in our home. So I just wonder what would happen if I looked at these other things we should be doing the same way I look at tithing? I need to do these things on a regular basis as well. Not only because we've been commanded to do so, but to receive the blessings promised to us. Obedience also comes to mind. We are given commandments to see if we will obey. I never really thought about it this way before, but it makes perfect sense to me now.

After school one day when the kids had some friends over, we made fry bread. I let them use cookie cutters and they had a lot of fun! This was pretty hard for me, with being on HCG and all, but the kids enjoyed themselves!

I threw the kids a combined birthday party(something I will never do again). Rachel's was fairy themed and Jarrett's was super heroes.

I couldn't get a good picture of Rachel in her fairy costume before she got too hot to do anymore, so this is the only one I got of her smiling.

I had all the little girls decorated their own headbands and wands. Here they all are minus Rachel.

This is Jarrett, very happy.

I made each of the boys their own super hero cape with their initial and a mask to go with it. This was our Super Hero Squad!

We took the kids to a local baseball game here in Ogden a couple weeks ago. They had a blast! I think their favorite part was the food, though. Jarrett was lucky enough to have one of the players come and hand him a ball before the game even started. He was thrilled!

I am so tired of trying so hard to make my kids happy. I wish there was some magical potion or dust I could give them to make them at least appear to be happy. I spend so much time doing things for them, all I want in return is to know my efforts were appreciated. That's it. That's all I want. Am I asking too much? Do I just need to forget it and realize this is just part of motherhood? I love my kids so much, I just want them to be happy.

We took the kids to Liberty Park one day. We found a little cement water park there which had running water the kids could play in. It was such a hot day, what a way to cool off!! So fun!

I haven't been on here for awhile. I want to share what we've been up to this summer. I'll start with the 3rd of July. We went to a parade in Kaysville where my family has always gone. There is a water part of the parade that is just like a HUGE water fight. They go all out with fire engines and people on the streets have hoses hooked up it's a lot of fun! That night we went to see Kaysville fireworks, another tradition. Part of the fair they have going on has bounce houses and slides that the kids went on for free. After fireworks the family went to my Grandma's to have watermelon and light some fireworks of their own. We stopped for a potty break before going home. I know you're thinking, didn't her grandma pass away? Yes, she did. It was very strange to go into her house with most of the furniture gone and the rest staged to sell. It's such a cold, dismal place now. Nothing near the warmth and happiness you used to feel going there. Anyway, this is the first year my kids didn't totally freak out watching fireworks! Even Carter enjoyed them, which was a big surprise to me!

James got a Styrofoam airplane for Father's Day, so we went to try it out at a local park. This park has a huge hill. The kids like to roll down of course, but they recently saw some kids going down penguin-style, so they tried it. This is what they were doing when James wanted to join in. They had so much fun penguin racing down the hill while I held Carter. We had a blast this Father's Day!

I decided to update some pictures since our garden looks so much better than it did in the other pictures. In this garden box we have tomatoes(2 different kinds), red bell peppers, broccoli, romaine lettuce, sugar snap peas, and yellow banana peppers. In the other smaller box we have cucumbers and zucchini. It's exciting to see I can grow things and have them not die!

So we decided we are going to have a treat night once a week instead of no candy. We were having different kinds of treats instead of candy that were doing more damage than candy in the long run. So we've had our "treat night" 3 times now and it's working really well! We're doing this as a family so even the kids have one day they can have treats. I think it's teaching them that treats are only a sometimes thing. Yes, I know this is something they should have been taught from the beginning, but when I have such a sweet tooth I really didn't care until now. Anyway, I was putting the kids to bed and was in with Jarrett while he said his prayers. He said his normal prayer but was trying to change it up. He said, "Thank you for letting us have a good treat day". It was so cute! He can be so funny, I just love the little guy!

I'm feeling very blessed lately. I feel like I'm spoiled with the life I have. I have a wonderful husband who puts up wth a lot from me. I have 3 great kids whom I love dearly. Rachel is always willing to help me with anything. She always seems to know when I'm having a hard time. Jarrett makes me laugh with his random remarks. Yesterday he told me he wants to wear his muscle shirt so he can keep his muscles. Carter is just so cute and chubby! I have a nice home, too. I'm so very grateful for everything that blesses my life!

I'm so excited for General Conference this weekend! I've made some little Conference books for the kids with all kinds of activities so they won't get bored. Sugardoodle has lots of ideas for Conference. I have a link on my blog to that blog, if anyone is interested. I look forward to hearing from our leaders this time of year. With it being spring and all, I feel like it's a time to renew myself and how I live the gospel. It's a good time of reflection for me.

These bloggers take their time finding the best deals online and in the stores so we don't have to. I saw the girl who does Freebies 2 Deals on Studio 5 one day; and have been on her site every day ever since. You should check it out. I have signed up for several free samples and am waiting for them to come in the mail. I've already got a free box of Oreo Cakesters! I love getting free stuff! I'm really excited about grocery shopping, too; knowing I can save a lot of money is pretty fun!

I must be crazy! So far this morning I have listened to Rachel cry, yell, scream, and cry some more all because she didn't want to get dressed. So naturally, she has a red face from crying so much. I tell her to go wash her face so it won't be red for school and she tells me she doesn't want to go to school today. I ask her why and she says it's because she doesn't want to go with a red face. So, since I'm a sucker (or just too lazy to drag everyone out of the house) I tell her it's ok if she wants to stay home. I sure hope it doesn't back-fire...

I went to get my hair colored on Saturday. Don't laugh too hard, please! I thought I knew what I wanted; but this is how it turned out. It came out a lot lighter than I expected it would and the blond pieces were way too wide!
I feel like a fool and even worse, now I have to deal with it. At least until we get paid again. Don't get my wrong, the girl at the beauty school did an excellent job, I just don't like how it turned out. My bad!

Oatmeal Pumpkin Cookies

These cookies are so good I had to share! They taste a oatmeal cookies with a hint of pumpkin bread....sooo good!

2 c flour
1 1/3 c oats
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp salt
1 c butter or margarine, softened (I use butter flavored Crisco)
1 c pumpkin puree
1 c packed brown sugar
1 c sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350. Grease baking sheets.

Combine flour, oats, baking soda, cinnamon, pie spice and salt in medium bowl. Beat butter, brown sugar and sugar in large mixer bowl until light and fluffy. Add pumpkin, egg and vanilla; mix well. Add flour mixture; mix well. Drop 1/4 cup of dough on baking sheet; spread into 3 inch circle or oval. Repeat with remaining dough.

Bake 14-16 minutes or until cookies are firm and lightly browned. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; move to wire racks to cool completely.

Makes 20-25 large cookies.

Well so far so good. No candy or soda for 2 days now! It's the working out I'm having a problem with. My boys seem to know when Mommy wants to get up early to exercise. Carter was up twice last night(after sleeping through the night for weeks now), and Jarrett got up to sleep in our bed for about 15 minutes between the times Carter got up. Then he went back to bed in his own bed. Grrr! I might have to plan on exercising way early or in the evening.

So yesterday wasn't so great. We still had Martinelli's Sparkling Cider left over from New Year's, so James and I decided to finish it off and THEN start no soda. Well, that got me looking at the leftover candy(which I should've thrown out but didn't) and I thought what the heck!, I've already broken the no soda rule, so why not? So much for will power. So today I started over. I also started Yoga Booty Ballet again. I need a fun way to lose all those extra holiday and baby pounds ;)

New Years Resolutions

I've decided I'm going to try to keep some resolutions this year. I also want to blog about my progress each day so I can document it. I have one resolution so far and that is to stop eating candy and drinking soda. James is doing this too.

My sweet Grandma passed away last night. She started having back pains Saturday morning so my aunt had her lay down and she was in bed all day(except going to the bathroom). My Mom went over to her house after work and James and I went over to have dinner with them. Poor Grandma just stayed in bed because her back was hurting her so much. The kids went in to say hi to her. I'm glad they did, even though I didn't know it, this was the last time they were going to see her. My aunt Barbara took her to the hospital sometime on Sunday because she started urinating blood and was still in so much pain. My Mom called me after she got off work, which is when I found out she was in the hospital where they were trying to stableize her. That was when I knew she wasn't going to be here much longer. I don't have all the facts straight as to when everything happened, but I do know some things. Her kidneys were failing. They found out from other records that she was only running on 10-15% of her heart, too.

We had a family prayer with everyone that was in the hospital and everyone got to say their good-byes one by one. She had a hard time talking, but had something to say to everyone. She even talked to some on the phone taht could not be there. She waited until she had seen everyone of her family members that could make it to the hospital. I think it was around 8:00 when it happened. There were only 5-6 people in the room with her those last couple of minutes. She waited until three of her daughters left the room, and then she was gone.

Sad as it may be, I know we will be together again someday through the plan of salvation. I miss you, Grandma. You were one of my very best friends in this life and it will be hard without you. I imagine you are happy and healthy and not in pain anymore. I know you are beautiful and imagine you dancing and running and doing everything you love to do. Thank you for all you have done for me and given me. I will always have you with me in my heart and remember you. "I'll see you soon!" I love you, Grandma!

Glee was awesome last night! For those of you that don't watch the show, it was mostly about people with disabilities. Growing up with an older brother in a wheelchair, you can see why I was touched by this. I didn't understand then the way I do now the struggles he must have gone through living every day in a chair, not being able to do many things on his own. I'm glad the writers of the show sort of addressed this issue and others. I was touched the most when the mean cheerleader coach went to visit her sister. I'm glad my family was blessed with my brother Casey, who has passed on from this life to the next. He taught me alot; especially about the gospel. I'm grateful for moments like this that help me remember him and how truly awesome he was!

New House?!

James just talked to a loan officer(?) about getting a loan for a house! We have to have our credit checked and have some forms filled out before Oct 1st; then we would qualify for the $8,000 from the government. We would also get $5,000 for buying our first home through this bank. Can we say down payment!! Now I don't know all about what goes on to buy a house; but I'm still pretty excited!! Especially since we recently found one online we fell in love with!! Wish us luck that all goes well!!

Poor Jarrett had a tummy ache last night. He's been a little constipated so we've been giving him a laxative. I thought the tummy ache was from that, so we sent him to bed hoping he would relax enough to sleep. Low and behold, about 20 minutes later he came out of his room crying. He was covered in vomit! So James took him to get cleaned up and he was so sad. James asked him what was wrong and he said "I threw up on my dog". He didn't care so much that it was all over him, his bed and his pillow, just that it was on his dog.

Day of firsts

It's a day of firsts in our house today.
It's Rachel's 1st day of 1st grade!(I made it there and back without shedding a tear!) I can't believe I have a little girl in the first grade! Where has the time gone? This is good for all of us; mostly because now Rachel has something to do and won't be fighting with everyone so much.
It's also the first time I'll have one-on-one time with Jarrett...

Isn't being pregnant hard enough without a 15-year-old stuck in a 6-year-old body?! I swear Rachel could be 15 with all the fit-throwing, door slamming and yelling in my face she does every day of her life! Sometimes I just want to throw in the towel! Am I really that bad of a Mom if I don't want my kids to have candy every single day? If so, shame on me. I would give anything if we could have one happy day together where both of my children act like the little angels I know they are. But then life would be too easy, right? Here's to parenting!

This past March Rachel fell off the monkey bars at the park and landed right on her arm, breaking it. 8 x-rays and I think 2 months later, she finally got her cast off.

What's going on...

It's been awhile since I've posted anything; thanks to morning sickness; so here I go. First things first, I'm about 17 weeks along now and FINALLY starting to feel human again. I have three more weeks to go to find out what we're having (I'm hoping for a girl). I'm also looking more like I'm pregnant and not like I'm fat. Very Exciting!!
Poor Rachel. She's been doing really well trying to cross the monkey bars lately. Well, the one time I wasn't watching she fell and landed on her arm, breaking it. She's had a cast on since she broke it the first or second week of March. We'll take her in on May 4 to see if the doctor wants to keep it on another 4 weeks or not. I'm hoping for the best. Yeah it would suck to have it on another 4 weeks, but if it fixes the break in her arm, so be it. She's taken it pretty well. It hasn't really bothered all that much, which is good.
Jarrett decided to start using the potty!!! Two days ago. We had to bribe him by telling him he couldn't play the Wii until he used the potty. It didn't work at first, but when he realized we were serious, he got a clue. He still hasn't gone #2, but he's only had 2 mistakes since he started. We're so proud of him!
That's about it for now. I'm sure I'll be keeping better track of things and writing more blogs now that I'm feeling better.

For the last few months I've convinced myself I'm done having children. I'm very happy with two, it's an easy number to deal with; especially on the days when I'm not so patient. Well our Father in Heaven was apparently disappointed in my decision. You guessed it...I'm currently expecting baby number three due in the end of September or the begining of October. Forgive me if I sound bitter about this whole thing, but I kind-of am. I'm really not looking forward to being sick for nine months followed by months of sleep-less nights. It will be ok in the long run I know, but for now it sucks!!!

I just wanted to update everything... We've moved into our new apartment! Well, all the important stuff anyway. We're still working on getting the rest of our junk out. We moved into and apartment above my mom. It has vaulted ceilings and brown walls and I love it! I had my 27th birthday on Saturday. James took me to dinner and the Off Broadway Theater in Salt Lake City. The Off Broadway theater does comedy plays as well as a comedy show (like Whose Line). There are no crude jokes or anything because they like to keep it family friendly. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is bored with dinner a movie and looking for something different to do. I'm also still trying to get Jarrett using the potty. Key word is trying. I feel so bad for the little guy when he's sits on the potty and tries so hard but has nothing happen! He gets so sad and says he can't do it. Breaks my heart. I still encourage him to try.

We've finally decided to move out of our apartment. We've been trying to decide whether we should or not; but after buying Guitar Hero World Tour and realizing how loud the drums are we want to move. That's not the only reason of course, we're just out-growing this place. So wish us luck!

I wanted to write about this before I forget...I don't remember what was going on that day, but there was a time when Rachel was throwing a fit about something. James had told her several times to stop and finally lost his temper. He said " Rachel, quit your shit!" Jarrett just happened to be sitting at the table with James at the time. Potty Time!

After my two first failed attempts to potty train Jarrett, I've decided to look to the books. I've searched the libraries and found everything I could on potty training boys. I even checked out the one movie I never wanted to hear again after training Rachel; for boys of course. It has the most anoying song ever, but I'm desperate and willing to try anything at this point! My last failed attempt had me changing underwear more often than those stupid diapers! I don't know why he can't grasp the concept, he's a smart kid! So this will be where I record our progress. Hopefully, it won't be too long...

Flabby, Fat, and Lazy-No More!!!

I've decided I'm tired of being fat! I have been working out for the last 4 months, 3 times a week, for and hour each time and have seen hardly any results! This is so frustrating!!! So I am making a plan to change the way I eat to see if this will help. I'm sure that's the reason why I haven't lost any weight, so I will change it my eating habits. So if anyone has any words of encouragement during this change, they would be greatly appreciated!

Washington DC

We were blessed to spend our Christmas and New Year holidays in Maryland with James' family this past year. It was so much fun to get to see all of his siblings and Mom and Bill. The kids had a blast playing with their cousins. I'll tell more about our trip later. We were able to go to downtown DC a couple days before we left, and took some pictures.

My new love: Twilight

So as you can tell, I've read Twilight. I've also dragged my husband to see the movie with me, and I LOVED it! The reason I'm writing about this is because after my Mom and sister raved about the book, I said I would never read it. The main reason is because we don't share alot of the same interests so I thought I would never like it. It wasn't until I heard everyone else I knew start talking about it that I decided to read it for myself.Needless to say, I love it! I'm debating whether to read it again, or go on to the next book. I also love the soundtrack(thanks to Marybeth) and can't stop listening to it. Don't be surprised to hear more about this later on...

"The Christmas Story"

I'm a little late at getting my Christmas page going...but it's better late than never. Something I'm going to miss this year is watching "The Christmas Story" on TBS. They play it over and over again on Christmas Eve for a 24 hour period. Since we decided to down-size our cable(not to mention our cable bill) it will be missed this year. So in lieu of this, I have this picture of Jarrett that reminds me of the movie. Yes I know it's a poodle instead of a bunny rabbit, but it still does the trick.

Pumpkin Patch

My mom and I took the kids to the pumpkin patch a couple of weeks before Halloween. It was a lot of fun to have the kids pick their own pumpkins right off the vine! When it was time to leave, we went to take a picture by this fake cowboy. When we went up to it, it started talking to the kids, scaring them half to death. We then found out the guy who owns the patch had a microphone and was controlling the cowboy. We had a lot of fun!

Well I just got back from the General Relief Society Session with Linda and Emma. There were some really great talks by the Relief Society Presidency, and then one by President Uchtdorf. The talks made me feel like I'm not at all inadequate being a woman. I just wanted to share my feelings from the session. I was very impressed by the things President Uchtdorf talked about. He asked the question What is the greatest happiness? The answer he gave was God's happiness. God's happiness comes from creating and being compassionate. He also talked about how every daughter of God is a masterpiece. i'm going to type out all the notes I took from his talk. The more you trust and rely on the spirit, the more you are able to create. Walk with the Lord. Those that bring sunshine into the hearts of others will bring sunshine into their own hearts. God will encircle you in the arms of His love. You are choice daughters of our Heavenly Father. Stand with your head held high, Heavenly Father loves you. I thought he gave an amazing talk.
